Welcome ; Located in southeast Minnesota's Driftless region of hills, valleys, fields and forests, we are a grass based working dairy farm with over 100 acres of woodland, including an extensive trail system and campsites in our wooded acres. What makes this woodland special is it's quiet, secluded setting and over 6 miles of hiking / skiing trails. Our farmstead sits three quarter of a mile off the paved county highway on our well maintained gravel driveway. Each of our campsites are secluded from the others with their own sawdust compost toilets, picnic tables, fireplaces, and firewood. Two of our sites require 4WD with a minimum of 6 inches ground clearance to access, and two are accessible with 2WD. If you do not have 4WD we can help transport your gear while you enjoy the walk in. There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. At night it is common for owls to visit the campsite area to say hello, and coyotes talking in the distance. The winding trails through 100 acres of woodland offer a variety of woodland habitats, from Old growth Maple to mixed hardwood, to dense brush, to the edges of open pastureland. Bring your fat bike or mountain bike for an enjoyable ride. For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing or snowshoeing / hiking on the property. However the Rock Bottom Cabin is our only heated and insulated site and is available for winter booking. Winter access is walk in only with snow on the ground or in the forecast. We can help transport gear. This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm and guided tours of the dairy and cattle are available when scheduling allows. Children 12 and younger are free at our campsites. No need to be counted as guests , but please let us know when requesting to book. We do not allow non-booked visitors to our campsites due to the secluded, remote location, and accessibility.

Pitch your tent or park your small to medium sized motorhome or camper trailer at a secluded site at the edge of a woodland, next to green pastures. The site is a short drive on a primitive, bumpy, road through pastureland from our farmstead. The Round Mound campsite is 3 miles from the nearest Interstate 90 exit. NOTE: We do have a parking spot near our buildings with electricity - 30/50 amp RV hookup - space for larger RV's. This would be for highway travelers with self contained RV's, looking for an overnight spot to stay at. This is available as part of the Round Mound listing as an option. Please message us for details. This RV electric hookup can be used for charging EV's, and is an easy hike from the remote Round Mound location. ROCK BOTTOM CABIN

ROCK BOTTOM CABIN is a primitive sleeper cabin, (NO electricity, plumbing, or AC), in a hardwood forest setting. The Cabin is in a very secluded location. Vehicle access to the RBC requires 4WD with at least 6 inches of ground clearance, OR, we will help transport you and your gear with a tractor or utility vehicle. Let us know your needs when you book with us, and we will help you with getting to the site. We will escort you to the site upon arrival and provide maps of our hiking trails. WINTER USE: Access to the site is walk in only, 2000 feet, with snow on the ground or in the forecast. We have sleds for gear or may be able to use a tractor if the snow is not too deep. The Rock Bottom Cabin is 10 ft. wide by 20 ft. long and sleeps four comfortably on either a full size futon, or an extra length full size bed, this bed can be split into two extra length single beds. If your family is larger than 6 please message us for exceptions to the listed capacity. There is room at the site for extra tents (please inquire). The cabin consists of two small semi rooms with a partition and curtain dividers on each end, and a small entry area that contains a wood stove, for winter heating, in the middle. The cabin is fully insulated and well ventilated. It has two large windows with insulated curtains in the sleeping rooms, as well as screened wall and eve vents. We provide drinking water in a thermos and wash water in a barrel. We also provide mattresses, sheets, and pillows, but please bring your own sleeping bags or blankets, and favorite pillow, to suit your needs. Guests also need to bring cooking / eating utensils. There is an outhouse on site with toilet paper, a picnic table, and a fireplace to cook on. Firewood is provided, no charge, donations accepted. Our rock Bottom Cabin campsite is ideal for those looking for a quiet woodland setting, with a few comforts. Please bring good flashlights with you for night time excursions to the outhouse. For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing or snowshoeing / hiking on the property. This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm. We do not allow non-booked visitors to our campsites due to the secluded, remote location, and accessibility.

COLD SEASON - Please consider our "ROCK BOTTOM CABIN" listing for winter camping.  Wooden Tent site is a primitive site, (NO electricity, plumbing, heat, or AC), in a secluded hardwood forest setting, 300-foot elevation drop from ridge top to valley campsite. Easy walk in / drive in ( 4 wheel drive )  trail access, plus five miles of woodland hiking trails on property, maps provided. The Wooden Tent campsite is accessible by four wheel drive vehicle - minimum clearance 6 inches,  - if the soils are not saturated. If guests do not arrive in a four wheel drive vehicle, we are able to help transport your gear to the site with a UTV while you enjoy the walk in, or a tractor and trailer if conditions are poor.  Let us know your needs when you book with us and we will do our best to help you with getting to the site. The  Wooden Tent sleeps 2 adults comfortably with plenty of room at campsite for additional tents as well, ( please inquire ). This campsite though close to highway access is very quiet and secluded.  The only artificial lights visible from the campsite are the occasional airplane and your own flashlights or lanterns ( strongly recommended because it is very dark in our woods at night). When the sky is clear, the  stars are fabulous.   Our Wooden Tent campsite is ideal for those looking for a quiet woodland setting, with a few comforts - a nice fireplace (with firewood), picnic table, outhouse, and solid shelter. Castaway on our Hilltop Queen - sleeper cabin. Salvaged from the depths of the Mississippi, we gutted this houseboat down to the bones and rebuilt it as a simple but cozy, primitive (NO electricity, plumbing, heat, AC), sleeper cabin. Enjoy the treetop view into our woodland from the canopied bow or from the upper fly deck ( complete with helm ). Inside, the primary cabin consists of a full size platform bed and a small loveseat which could be used as a small child's sleeper. There is also a second indoor level set up as a dinette with a folding table and chairs, or can be used as a second sleep area with the folding full size mattress on the floor. This area has windows on three sides, two with screens, providing a dry eating space in the event of a rain shower. There is space at the site to accommodate a small tent as well.  The Hilltop queen has 12 volt solar powered lighting, but please bring good flashlights to navigate the rest of the campsite after dark. The site is a short drive on a primitive, bumpy, road through pastureland from our farmstead.  Our Hilltop Queen campsite is ideal for those looking for a quiet woodland setting, with a few comforts - a nice fireplace (with firewood), picnic table, outhouse, and solid shelter. HILLTOP QUEEN
Mike and Joan were phenomenal hosts. Joan greeted us, provided a detailed map of the property and trails, and personally led us to our site. Mike later stopped by to introduce himself, which was thoughtful and made us feel welcome. The amenities struck a great balance between immersion and convenience. We appreciated the gray water sink, cooking grate over the fire area, covered firewood, on site garbage/recycling, and outhouse. Note that there isn't a traditional fire pit, only the setup shown in the photos. The outhouse is about 10 steps from the boat, surprisingly spacious, and uses a composting system with sawdust provided after each use. There was also a child potty seat available which is one less thing for a family of littles to pack! The site requires a short walk down a mowed hill. Access is through the hosts' property, so there isn't a separate private entrance. You can come and go, but it's easiest to arrive with everything you'll need. Our 8-year-old and two dogs loved the space. The site felt private, we enjoyed the nature playground and driving the boat, and the cliff-top location was beautiful. It was breezy during our stay and we encountered very few mosquitoes. One drawback was that the boat felt damp and musty. We found a few dead bugs and some mouse droppings, which didn't bother us much, but the musty smell transferred to our clothing and bedding and required thorough washing once we returned home.

We had a perfect weekend at the Round Mound Campsite. Mike & Joan have thoughtfully put together the site with a clean bathroom, drinking water, firewood, cooking stove and multiple options to set up a tent. Lots of trails, heard coyotes and owls every night along with cows. Secluded and quiet. Already talking about a trip back!

A magical place
ROCK BOTTOM CABIN
A truly beautiful hideout in the woods. Mike met us when we arrived and lead us down a magical path in our 4x4 to the cabin - he prepared everything so it was ready for us. The trails are a highlight which are so much fun to explore. In short - if you need to escape from the pace of modern life this is a gem. Thank you Mike for making such a special place to share.

My husband and I camped here two nights this spring, and it was so lovely! No near neighbors, all the calming nature sounds, kind hosts, a very nice composting toilet that did not smell at all (which is huge to me), a well-ventilated A-frame cabin, and plenty of space to explore on the trails on site. I would give this camp 6 stars if I could. Side note: do take the "vehicles with AWD and 6 inches of clearance" seriously! The drive down would be pretty impossible otherwise

WOODEN TENT IN THE WOODS
First it is very easy to get to the farm. Directions are easy to follow. Once you get there you find the kindest welcome and many helpful directions on activities and getting around on their beautiful land. Then, you are left to your own lodging choice both quiet and private. The map and signs for hiking are equivalent to or better than my state park experiences. A night time fire is easy to build and for me, sleeping in the Wooden Tent was just what I wanted and with more space than I thought I would get. If you are wishing for a change of pace and scenery, this is your place. I look forward to returning.

This is such a gem of a place! We booked last minute and had a really warm welcome to the farm by Mike. Definitely believe him about the 4WD and arriving before dark being needed going down to the cabin! Being early spring, everything was just starting to turn a little green and it was still quite chilly at night and Mike had the wood stove going when we arrived :) Everything at this site is so well thought out and JUST enough of what you need. It is so thoughtful and appreciated that they provided ample drinking water and firewood. I love all of the whimsical touches of the property and trails. Looking forward to coming back to see it in another season as well!

ROCK BOTTOM CABIN
We had the most wonderful experience staying at this Hipcamp! From the moment we arrived, it felt special. The property is a beautiful wooded paradise, and the rustic cabin is tucked perfectly into the trees. When we arrived, we were greeted by the kindest host who showed us where to park and gave us a map of the trails through the gorgeous woods. He walked us through the lay of the land and gave us a few helpful tips so we could make the most of our stay. We loaded all of our supplies for the weekend into his tractor, and he led us down to the absolute cutest little cabin you could imagine. We didn’t have to worry about lugging our camping gear. The cabin had a cozy wood burning stove, and they supplied more firewood than we could possibly need for the whole weekend. The out house was a compost toilet and was so nice and very clean. Everything about the place felt thoughtfully cared for. We brought our dogs with us, and they absolutely loved exploring the trails and open wooded space. It was the perfect place to let them enjoy nature right along with us. We spent our time exploring the trails and soaking in the peaceful energy of the land. It was truly a special place to reconnect to nature and relax. Our hosts, Mike and Joan, were incredibly welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed, including all the fresh water we could want. This place is easily a 20 out of 10. We felt so welcomed and can’t recommend it enough. We will absolutely be back!

My wife and I had such a great stay at the Rock Bottom Cabin. It is a very cozy and secluded place. We particularly enjoyed hiking the great network of trails on their beautiful land. We hope to be back!

Mike and Joan thought of everything. It was a perfect short stay for us. We appreciated the kindness shown to us and the ride to and from the site. We had our own little spot in nature with everything we needed. Campfires were so easy with the setup provided. Loved the presence of drinking water and wash up water. The compost toilet bathroom was clean and perfect. I’d come back in a heartbeat. Remember to bring warm sleeping bags or blankets if you are headed there in the fall!

Remote Peaceful Camping
WOODEN TENT IN THE WOODS
We loved our weekend deep in the woods staying in the Wooden Tent. Mike was great to work with and guided us right to the site and gave us a map of the trails to hike on. This is such a cool site and Mike and Joan's willingness to share their land with others. We had a few rain showers while trying to set up and the wooden tent was bone dry inside! The site has firewood, your own saw dust out house, garbage/ recycling, wash water, drinking water, chairs around the fire/ cooking area, they have literally thought of everything. Make sure if you visit you bring plenty of lights its dark dark that deep in the woods. It also seems 4-5 degrees cooler being that deep in the woods. We also didn't have any mosquitoes when we visitied mid September. At night you could hear owls and coyotes off in the distance. We did not see a single other person while camping and the few other sites are far away from each other so the nature sounds can be heard all day and night! We will 100% stay here again in the future. I will never camp at a regular camp site with neighbors again after this experience! Thanks again Mike and Joan for sharing your land and a great/ cool experience.

Round Mound is an excellent campsite. Beautiful views, very private, and Mike and Joan and done a wonderful job taking care of all the little things to make it great (very nice and clean outhouse, firewood, trail map, drinking water, etc.) Mike greeted us and took us to the site - he was helpful, friendly and very accommodating. Such a cool and unique spot!! How often do you have the chance to stay in an old boat rescued from the bottom of The Mississippi. Mike was very nice and showed us around the property. It had everything we needed, firewood, water, chairs. And the outhouse was the cleanest one I’ve ever been in. Definitely would recommend!

Miek and Joan were extremely accommodating with our stay. First, there was rain in the forecast so they upgraded us to the Hilltop Queen, which was lovely! I was very impressed with the setup (of all the sites, we took a walk around) and the outhouse is the BEST I've seen on hipcamp (and there have been other great ones!). Fire pits, water, and refuse setup made all aspects of enjoying the site easy. There was no "oh this is hard bc we are camping", just pure enjoyment. The trails were lovely and the map was much appreciated. We wish we could have gotten to explore more, but our dog got sick and we headed home early. Mike was really understanding and refunded us our unused night, which we were surprised by, because it was certainly not expected/necessary by our point of view. Again, wish we could have fulfilled our stay and enjoyed another day, but hopefully we will be able to stop by again.

ROCK BOTTOM CABIN
This was our third time back to the Gilles Family Dairy & Woodland, and our second stay at Rock Bottom Cabin. We brought friends with us this time, as we knew they'd love it. The site is down into a valley, surrounded by hillsides full of trees. It is very spacious and private. The grill set up for cooking over the fire was great, especially for a group. There is wood on site for the fire. Picnic table is extra large. There is a large awning on the front of the cabin, which came in handy when we had rain one evening, and still wanted to be outside. Mike and Joan are gracious hosts who clearly care for their property. This can be seen through communication, how well thought out the sites are, and how the trails on the property are cared for. I have no doubt we will visit again in the future.

The whole experience was nothing but GREAT! We were motocamping and the site was easy to get to on our bikes had everything we needed. They think of everything a camper may need in terms of wood for cooking and campfire to water for both washing and drinking plus a nice sink area if you had dishes to wash. The outhouse is clean. Would highly recommend this place to others, the host were also very nice and made sure our stay was good.

I love staying at Gilles dairy and woodland! Round mound campsite was PERFECT, the trails were beautiful and I was so pleased to be able to camp ing my hammock without worrying about hurting any of their beautiful treees. They have a perfect set up of 2 large posts the perfect distance for hammocking at this site!! I definitely want to return and bring friends!

I loved staying on Mike & Joan’s property! The site that I was booked to stay at was a little flooded from recent storms and so they upgraded me to a different site for free which was so lovely of them! Would definitely recommend staying here to others :)

The property itself is absolutely beautifu,set on a peaceful acreage with great hiking trails and a lot of natural charm. We stayed in the restored boat, which is a really unique and fun idea. However, I do want to mention for future campers that the boat could use a bit more attention to cleanliness. We noticed some mouse droppings, the floor hadn’t been swept, and there was a musty smell. None of these things ruined our stay, but it’s worth knowing ahead of time so you can set expectations. With a little extra care, this would be an amazing stay!

Mike is always a pleasure to talk to! The campsite was pristine and all the extras were amazing. The miles of trails could not be beat. And every time we have gone, there has been raspberries that we have picked along those trails.

ROUND MOUND CAMPSITE
This was my second time camping at Round Mound Campsite. The campsite, amenities, and trails were all well maintained. I enjoyed the quiet and even got to watch the cows feed right next to the site. Mike and Joan are very kind people and I enjoyed chatting with them. I will continue to recommend this campsite to friends and family! I hope to someday check out the other sites.
