Nestled in the heart of the San Luis Valley at the entrance to Penitente Canyon and Special Recreation Management Area and 50 minutes to Great Sand Dunes National Park, San Luis Valley Great Outdoors welcomes all guests to come and enjoy their cabins at Tin Can Camp. Tin Can Camp is located within 200 acres of Colorado State Trust Land at roughly 8,000 feet above sea level. The landscape is arid high desert with scattered groves of piñon and juniper trees. The camp serves as a convenient home base for launching adventures across the San Luis Valley to various local Hot Springs, archeological sites, and other small town local attractions. For the more adventurous guests, there is recreation right from Tin Can Camp with The Valleys largest trail system and climbing area less than a mile away and access to the vast expanse of the Rio Grande National Forest. The cabins are "micro homes" outfitted with modern conveniences. Each cabin has solar power, a propane heater, a compact kitchen with a sink, water jugs, and pump, two full size loft beds, a small table with chairs, an incinerator toilet, and a covered porch. Guests should know there is no water available on the property. You will need to bring water for all your needs. This includes cooking, washing, drinking, and for putting out fires. Guest should plan 2 gallons of water per person per day. A public well/pumphouse is at the intersection of County Road 38A and Road 40G (37.836363, -106.271551). Tin Can Camp is adjacent to the future Sangre de Cristo Dark Sky Reserve, and the property has spectacular views of the Milky Way Galaxy. Each cabin has a fire ring for guests to relax and enjoy the dark nighttime sky. Wood collecting on the property is not permitted, so guests must bring their own firewood. As mentioned, the property is located at the entrance to Penitente Canyon. Penitente Canyon is a Nationally-renowned climbing destination with more than 400 climbing routes. Penitente Canyon also has 30+ miles of non-motorized trails for mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian activities and guest have direct trail access from camp! Guests can ride mountain bikes directly from the property. There are numerous recreation, sightseeing, historical and cultural, and agricultural tourism opportunities in the nearby Rio Grande National Forest, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area. Gas, ice, water, and some groceries can be found nearby at the La Garita Trading Post, which has operated since 1913. The La Garita Trading Post is in a historic log cabin and serves the best local-beef burgers in the San Luis Valley.

#5 Conejos Cabin
We loved Canejos Cabin! I thought #4 looked the most private and secluded, but we really enjoyed unit #5. It was such a unique stay with beautiful views. Would highly recommend. Note that the incinderary toilets may take longer than expected for check out.

#1 Costilla Cabin
Impressive off-grid tiny home
I travelled to the tin can camp with 2 friends and stayed in Costilla Cabin the cabin was well managed with all the amenities. You have access to hiking trails to Penitent Cayon from the cabins. I really liked the cabins and had a great time over there. I am really impressed with off grid solar electricity, propane heating and incinerating toilet that has been set up in the cabin. There are few things to keep in mind like the ladder step to the lofts and you have to crouch in the loft area so you have to be mindful of those.

#3 Rio Grande Cabin
SLV camping
Really loved staying here for the night! The location of the land is beautiful with easy access to the canyon. The cabin was very cute with pretty much anything you’d need. The loft was cozy for sleeping and we were able to stay warm. We enjoyed having the option to cook over the fire and using the small stovetop! We will be sure to stay again.

#4 Mineral Cabin
We came to Penitente for an end of year celebration with a large group. Some of us tent camped at group site #1 and families with smaller children or who were less comfortable with that were able to stay at the cabins and still have the experience of togetherness in nature. It was so easy for them to just pop over to the cabin after s'mores with the group and cruise back over in the morning for a group hike. These cabins are such an asset to this area, and we are so grateful for the wonderful folks who run them.

#5 Conejos Cabin
Perfect getaway spot
These cabins are the coolest and Penitente is such a fun place to explore. Great for small families, couples, a few friends… Everything is nice and new, and thoughtful. Hosts are super helpful. Wonderful for a little Penitente getaway! All the good things about camping and Airbnb smashed together.

#1 Costilla Cabin
The cabins at Tin Can Camp were perfect for our group. Having a fully stocked kitchen and toilet were nice accommodations and made for an easier camping trip. Loved being able to ride our bikes on the access trail to and from Penitente. The views of the Sangres and the Valley are incredible from Tin Can Camp!
