Near Redwood National Park
Within a 30-minute drive from the Hiouchi Visitor Center.
The campground land is remotely located on private property and perfectly located for excursions to the Pacific Ocean, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, the Smith River National Recreation Area, and the Pacific Coast Ranges and mountain lakes such as the Devil's Punchbowl, Buck Lake, and Raspberry Lake. Relax and free you mind while camping on 119 acres of private property under starry skies with almost no light or noise pollution. In the surrounding area you can enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, surfing, mushrooming, berry-picking, beachcombing, birdwatching, and countless other outdoor activities. The campsites have picnic tables and fire rings, and campers are provided with 5 gallons of potable water, an outdoor, cold-water Artesian shower, and an outhouse. Bundles of wood are available for an extra charge when you book. The campsites are set within a deciduous and pine forest at about 1913 feet in elevation. There is a pond on the property, but its purpose is for wildlife habitat only so no water activities are permitted (that is, no swimming, fishing, boating, etc.) The property owner has a dog, two cats, and a menagerie of yard birds such as turkeys, peacocks, guinea hens, chickens, ducks, geese, etc. Kirk has lived off-grid for over twenty years and holds a wealth of information about the Gasquet / Del Norte County area. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the property is that it has had documented Sasquatch encounters over the past twenty years that have been published in "Tribal Bigfoot" (D. Paulides 2009). Kirk can tell you about his experiences with this and other phenomena on the property.

LOVED IT!
We absolutely loved camping at Free Your Mind Camping! We loved how remote it was, and we were lucky enough to have the whole campground to ourselves. The compost toilet was so clean and way better than a porta-potty! Kirk was very friendly and gave us some great tips on the best places to go to view the Redwoods. You could tell that Kirk cares for the campground every day with how clean it was. You can hear Kirk’s peacocks and chickens, but they are quiet at night.

We had the luxury of having the site all to ourselves. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the host was incredibly responsive to our needs. It was peaceful and well taken care of. We were able to make it our little home away from home.

This was a good spot to park our small camper overnight while we enjoyed the river during the day. The campsite is about 3 miles up a windy road, and tucked away on private property. If the sound of domestic birds is not your thing, (peacocks, roosters, turkeys), you may have trouble here, as there are a lot of them at a nearby home, and they are especially loud at dawn and dusk. The sites have fire pits and picnic tables and bags of potable water, but we also brought our own and definitely needed it. The composting toilet (not a pit toilet) is small and in a tent, which isn't entirely pleasant, but was fine since we were the only ones staying there. There are trash and recycling cans available, so you don't have to pack everything out. It was easy to find and access, and the person on the phone was helpful and flexible about our check out time (much appreciated!). It's pretty rustic camping, but if you're looking for a place to sleep and cook your meals, and don't mind a drive down the hill to get to things, this is a nice little spot!

Perfect Spot!
We loved camping in the fisher spot, gorgeous land and area! We were a quick drive to awesome fishing spots and hiking in Jedediah. Kirk's land is high up enough that we heard no road noise, had a wonderful view of the stars at night, and a fantastic view of the mists over the river as we headed out each morning. I HIGHLY recommend staying at this campsite, it was perfect for exploring the area! For amenities, the campsites had access to the spring water via a hose right by the campsites, a compost toilet that was always clean, and a good deal of firewood for the price! Theres a general store down the highway with anything you could need (including hot coffee, baked goods, ice blocks, etc). I think the fisher and woozle sites were the best of the bunch.

Fisher site review
Beautiful site in the middle of the redwoods, nice and private, very comfortable. Kirk was amazing, he even stopped by and spent some time with us to chat about his Bigfoot experiences. The sites are close together, great for groups if you book multiple. All amenities were clean and abundant, loved that they provided 5gals of drinking water straight from the spring so we didn't have to pack it. The Fisher site has a little tucked in alcove for the tent, and had decent shade. Some mosquitoes, so bring your repellant. We loved our experience!
